Concerning the Swordfish -10 tournaments, a new approach

Written by Anders Linnard: "Competitions running during Swordfish 2010
This is written in an effort to prepare participants and judges for the tournaments at Swordfish. We have a couple of aspects, which we believe involve a somewhat new approach to competitions. We also realize that these novelties may cause concern for some, while others will think they are steps in the right direction. In any case we want to explain why we have chosen this path."

New article by Matt Galas, "On the value of tournaments"

  " Greetings, All!

It's no secret that a number of us in the WMA/HEMA community are actively working on rule-sets for tournaments. In recent threads on this subject (both on US and European sites), I've noticed that there is a certain subset of our community that has a visceral reaction to the idea of tournaments.

The website with several translations and transcriptions can be found here: www.destreza.us/index.html
A video series where Puck and Mary teach some Destreza can be seen here: www.youtube.com/watch
From the Destreza website:
"During the 1500s a new system of swordplay began to develop in Europe unlike any the world had ever seen. The Spanish created a new, universal method of fighting based on Reason and Mathematics that could be taught to any student. They called the system La Verdadera Destreza, the True Art.

New English Sutor translation

Jacob Sutor (also spelled "Jakob Sutor") was a German fencing master who published a fighting manual in 1612, called the Neues Künstliches Fechtbuch . The book was mostly an updated version (or outright plagiarism) of Joachim Meyer 's work.
Sutor's Fechtbuch includes techniques for the long sword , dussack , rapier (which appears to be an early form of the weapon more similar to a cut and thrust sword ), rapier and main gauche , rapier and cloak , case of rapiers, staff , pole axe, and the flail

Axel Pettersson wins two tournaments in a row

On 21 March, 2010, The Hammertetz Open International Tournament was battled out in Houston Texas, USA. The competition consisted of two separate torunaments, fought directly after each other. The first - possibly the first dussack tournament in several hundred years - followed historical Belgian fencing rules. The second - a longsword tournament - was fought with synthetic wasters according to WMAC and HEMAA rules.
Both tournaments were won by Axel Pettersson of Gothenburg Historical Fencing School, GHFS. Not a small achievment considering some of the world's best HEMAists participated and that the fighting went on for the most part of the day.
A big congratulations to Axel!

Hanwei released a steel longsword trainer a few years back based on original training swords. Many HEMA practitioners complained they were too whippy, and hanwei seems to have corrected this in the new version. The new swords (called "Federschwerts in the HEMA community, though this is a modern term) functions as a cheap trainer for drilling and sparring.

Historical European Martial Arts in Blackbelt Magazine

  from Blackbelt website:
The Return of Western Sword Fighting
Few realize that modern boxing has its roots in the fighting systems of medieval Europe. In fact, the tradition of holding matches on a raised, roped-off platform evolved from the medieval method for publicly testing fencing students, an event known as “playing one’s prize.” A reminder of this ancient rite still survives in the term “prize fighter.”

Of course, medieval fencing bore little resemblance to the modern sport. Students trained in a variety of weapons, including the sword, spear, polearm, dagger and mace, along with a form of unarmed combat called ringen . The medieval warrior practiced a system of combat that took into account all the ranges, weapons and armor styles he was likely to encounter.

No unbroken medieval fighting tradition exists today, but many organizations are painstakingly reconstructing these arts from historical combat manuals written by the great “Masters of Defence,” such as Fiore dei Liberi, Johannes Liechtenauer and Hans Talhoffer. In the historical European martial arts community, these manuscripts are signposts to recovering the lost skills of the western warrior...

There will be a JdP instructor that will regularly provide exercises for the group to work with, in form of text, images, and video, to help them understand what is necessary. From that on, the group will have a very close following of it's development by the instructor, answering questions and most important, from time to time the group will be required to record videos of exercises executed the best they can for instructor's review. This level of interaction will help maintain the quality of the technical development of the group.

...oldest extant in the Italian tradition. The book survives in four known manuscripts. One of them, housed at the Getty museum in Los Angeles, CA, is held to be the most complete, and is the basis on this translation. Writing for an audience of illustrious students including the powerful marquis Nicolo' d' Este, Fiore presents detailed instruction on wrestling as well as the use of several weapons including longsword, axe, dagger, staff, lance and others. Fiore's text has been translated by experienced historical martial artist Tom Leoni of the Order of the Seven Hearts and reviewed by Maestro Sean Hayes of the Northwest Academy of Arms and by Greg Mele of the Chicago Swordplay Guild.
